Emotional Resonance is Helen Watkin’s remarkable story as told by her colleague, best friend, husband, and sweetheart, Jack Watkins. The two of them adventured around the world, lecturing and teaching at graduate universities, medical schools, scientific societies, and hospitals in over thirty nations. The book focuses on what she was like as a person and—through intriguing vignettes of her work—illustrates her ability to be “emotionally resonant” with her patients. Helen is an inspiration to all who seek success in work and happiness in love.
Helen and Jack Watkins published 10 books and over 180 articles, and founded the Ego State system of psychotherapy. John G. Watkins received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1941 and went on to teach at three universities and serve as chief psychologist at several hospitals. He has been the president of multiple national and international psychological associations, has received numerous awards, and has been interviewed on national TV by William Buckley (PBS), Morley Safer (60 Minutes), and Geraldo. One of his best-known successes was to get the notorious Hillside Strangler to confess to murder and to reveal his multiple personalities.
What others have said about Emotional Resonance:
This commemoration of Helen’s life is the story of a courageous woman who loved and was loved by all who knew her. The stories told about her in this beautiful book reveal her as deep, playful, laughing, authentic, and in love with her husband, Jack. As the years pass, Helen will be remembered as one of the most influential woman therapists our generation has known. Her seminal work with Jack on ego state therapy will stand as a beacon to therapists for succeeding generations, and she will be a major model for women and men on their journey to finding their own voices and in practicing the art of therapy.

Emotional Resonance is a touching, intimate portrayal of love between grown-ups who think, feel, and live with passionate intensity. It is also a kaleidoscopic study of Helen Watkins' ability to face life unafraid and to embrace those she encountered with respect, affection and compassion. We owe Jack Watkins a debt of gratitude for sharing this portrait of Helen with us.
